Junior Oracle Database Developer

£21k - £25k depending on experience

We are a Newcastle upon Tyne based Software development company who, due to continuing success in securing projects for major Public Sector organisations, are seeking to expand our team with the addition of a Junior Oracle Database Developer on a permanent basis. This is considered an entry level position with training to be provided on the job where appropriate, but any prior experience of Oracle, Postgres, SQL scripting, application development or relational databases would be beneficial. The successful candidate’s role would initially be SQL scripting on a government agency case-management system with a view to assisting in the wider aspects of database engineering as experience grows. The successful applicant will have a computer science degree (or similar) and be interested in a career as a Database Developer / Administrator (Oracle / Postgres etc.). This is an exciting position to be based in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Role: Supporting and developing a large Oracle database application for an established case management system for a government agency undergoing further development and general maintenance. This role is more development rather than DBA work.

The candidate will, under the direction of a Senior Oracle Developer/DBA, be involved in:
• Development and performance tuning of database code using PL/SQL to support the application;
• Support and maintenance of the application data for a Case Management System using SQL and PL/SQL;
• Support for PostgreSQL AS installation, maintenance, performance tuning, backup and recovery and migration utilizing Enterprise DB product set along with open source modules;
• Maintenance of Oracle Enterprise Database Server software including installation, maintenance, performance tuning and monitoring;
• Apply new application schema releases, Installing / upgrading / migrating / patching Oracle Enterprise software, trouble shooting and house-keeping;

The candidate must be able to demonstrate:

• Good analytical and problem-solving skills

• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Tenacity and the ability to see the job through to conclusion

It would be desirable, but not essential, if the candidate could also show experience in any of the following: -
• Oracle Database 11g Administration
• Oracle PL/SQL
• Unix / Linux
• Active Directory
• JBoss
• ApacheMQ
• EnterpriseDB
• Oracle Database Backup & Recovery
• Oracle Performance Tuning
• PostgreSQL Administration
• Java and Oracle Java Stored Procedures

SUMMARY

• Role: Supporting and developing a large Oracle database application for an established case management system for a government agency undergoing further development and general maintenance. This role is more development rather than DBA work.
• Team: Part of a small team of business analysts, Java developers, testers and support staff working alongside the applications DBAs.
• Location: Newcastle based but occasional travel to client sites may be required.
• Salary: 21k - 25k but dependant on experience
• Probation Period: 3 Months
• Hours: 9am to 5:30pm (but flexible around usual core working hours)
• Holidays: 25 days + bank holidays per annum
• Start Date: Negotiable
